"Team, unite up!"
― Wonder-Red's catchphrase
Wonder-Red (real name Will Wedgewood) is the main protagonist of The Wonderful 101. Red is a rookie Wonderful One, a member of a team of 100 special combat agents created by the CENTINELS Planetary Secret Service to defend the Earth from the GEATHJERK Federation Supreme Armada.
Wonder-Red was selected to lead the Wonderful Ones during the third GEATHJERK invasion of Earth to prove himself, but because of his inexperience, veteran Wonderful Ones (particularly Wonder-Blue) protested this decision, creating many difficulties for the rookie leader. However, Red's leadership, skill, and sheer passion for justice not only saved the day time and time again, but also eventually earned him the respect and admiration of his team.
In his civilian life, Wonder-Red is an unassuming Blossom City Elementary-School teacher by the name of Mr. Wedgewood.
Wonder-Red is the first playable character in the game, during Operation 000 Prologue. Wonder-Red fights with his fists, enhanced by his Vulcan Knuckles, and is the default user of Unite Hand.
Red's past is also explored when his childhood self, Young Will, is encountered during a flashback.
Wonderful File[]
The young leader of the Wonderful 100. Having just joined the Wonderful Ones after finishing a year of comprehensive training, Earth Defense War III is his first experience in combat.
Though technically still a rookie, he is extremely gifted, achieving a record score in both the written and field sections of the CENTINEL tactical examinations. Brimming with passion for justice, he takes a firm stance against those who threaten peace, but his by-the-books attitude and serious personality can occasional rub people the wrong way. Sometimes Red's seriousness crosses the realm of reason, and those around him find getting through to him almost impossible. The opposite is rarer, though, as Red has an incredible memory, and never forgets something after being told.
His deep-crimson CENTINEL-Suit boasts balance in all levels of performance, demonstrating diverse aptitude in any mission. The Vulcan Knuckles equipped to both his arms are capable of intense blows and machine-like accuracy, which can be even further increased in power via the "Unite Hand" Unite Morph technique.
[The following paragraph is added after completing Mission 002 of Operation 006-B]
Losing his father in a prior invasion of Earth, Red's longing for a lasting peace is seared into his spirit and he pursues it with a dedication second to none.
Red Truly believes the children are our future, so he has taken on the guise of a Blossom City Elementary School teacher in his everyday life, teaching them well so they can lead the way.
Description[]
Appearance[]
As a civilian elementary school teacher, Will Wedgewood dresses in business-casual attire. His outfit consists of a white and black dress shirt with a blue neck-tie and red sweater vest, blue-gray pleated pants, and black shoes. Will's short blond hair is neatly combed, and he normally wears thick glasses that obscure his blue eyes.
As a Wonderful One, Wonder-Red dons Wonder-Mask and a crimson red CENTINEL-Suit, with a light red jacket with popped collars brandishing the Wonderful Ones logo across its back. Unlike most other Wonderful Ones, Red's CENTINEL-Suit seems ordinary and lacks any customizations. In this form, Red's hair is swept back and wild-looking, with a short lock of hair loosely hanging over his forehead.
Like all Wonderful Ones, when Red activates his suit's Unlimited Form a cape is released from the back of the suit and protective plates extend from his mask, covering his mouth. When unmasked, Red's suit vanishes and he is reduced to black briefs.
Red's issued weapons are the Vulcan Knuckles: a set of gauntlet-like upgrades to his suit's gloves that enhance their wearer's hand-to-hand combat abilities. These glove upgrades consist of red armor plating with gold trim on back of the hands, each finger, and around the forearms, and with power gauges on each wrist.
Personality and Background[]
Wonder-Red is a serious person defined by his passion for justice and a tireless dedication to securing humanity's future. Despite his initial reluctance to lead the Wonderful Ones, Red is a natural leader and is quick to take charge. As a leader, Red seeks to understand and earn the respect of his team so that they can cooperate to their fullest potential. Despite Red's efforts, his inexperience as a Wonderful One regularly sparked conflicts with veteran Wonderful Ones who weren't willing to accept orders from a rookie, particularly Wonder-Blue.
Red is extremely gifted physically and academically, and despite his inexperience as a Wonderful One he has complete confidence in his abilities and never hesitates in battle. On the field, Red is a fast and creative thinker and regularly improvises new attacks and strategies using his surroundings, something that might come as an alarm to his team as his improvised methods can seem quite reckless and over-the-top at times.
Red is highly professional in his duties as a Wonderful One and always puts the completion of his mission first, and never leaves any unfinished business behind. When dealing with GEATHJERK, Red often makes an attempt at diplomacy with the invaders and always offers his opponents the opportunity to surrender, however such an offer is always refused if not simply ignored, leading to the creation of one of Red's most iconic catch-phrases: "Diplomacy fails again!"
Despite Red's serious nature and model behavior, he wouldn't be a Wonderful One without some eccentricities:
Red has an excellent memory, never forgetting anything he's told, and this comes up frequently in his habit of addressing everyone by their full name and title, no matter how long it is or how many times he's already done so. This quickly becomes a running gag, especially with Prince Vorkken and his exceedingly long introduction.
Additionally, despite Red's ability to stay calm and in control even during intense combat situations, Red seems to be easily flustered by the opposite sex: a harmless albeit humorous weakness that comes up often in his interactions with Immorta and Vijounne.
Finally, during the excitement of particularly intense battles, Red developed a habit of calling out his attacks with overly dramatic and comically verbose names, to the amusement (and sometimes panic) of the rest of the team.
Red is eventually revealed to be motivated by a past failure to protect his family: As a child, Young Will involved himself in the second GEATHJERK invasion of Earth by sneaking aboard a GDA gunship to be with his father, Arthur Wedgewood, when the gunship was attacked by the GEATHJERK Officer Laambo. In a moment of fear, Young Will hesitated to assist the Wonderful One sent to evacuate him, forcing Arthur to do so himself and be mortally wounded by Laambo in the process: a moment Red recalls constantly to this day.
Blaming himself for his father's death, Red vowed that he would never shy away from battle, and dedicate himself to his own ideals of bravery and justice to protect those around him.
Red's dedication to humanity extends even into his civilian life, where he's taken up the career of an elementary-school teacher with the hopes of preparing his students to face life's hardships head-on, and to lead humanity to a better future. As the civilian teacher Mr. Wedgewood, Red seems to adopt a meeker persona to conceal his identity as a CENTINELS operative. However, he's still quick to take charge during an emergency to ensure the safety of those around him, all without breaking character.
And although he conceals it well, it's been suggested that Red greatly enjoys the popularity and admiration his superhero persona receives.
A newspaper headline in the Epilogue reveals that Red eventually resumed teaching at Blossom City Elementary School after his absence. The Wonderful 101 Operation WOOF! reveals that after the events of the game, Red and Wonder-Goggles (Luka) have essentially become unofficial partners in defending the school from the remaining enemy forces, and that Red eventually reunited with Immorta.
Gameplay[]
Wonder-Red is a Unite Hand user, and the default user of Unite Hand unless changed through the Leader Select menu.
Wonder-Red is the first playable character and the only Wonderful One unlocked at the start of the game during Operation 000 Prologue, until he's automatically joined by Wonder-Blue and 18 other Sword and Hand using Minor Wonderful Ones shortly into the level, enabling the use of Unite Hand and Unite Sword.
As such, Unite Hand and Unite Sword are the first two Unite Morphs available at the start of the game.
Wonder-Red is also controlled as a solo character during Operation 004-B, when he and Wonder-Blue are briefly separated from the rest of the team.

Trivia[]
- Wonder-Red was the first and earliest character created for The Wonderful 101, with the game's initial pitch documents already using the name Wonder-Red for the leader of the team.[1]
- Wonder-Red was the first Wonderful One to be designed, and he went almost completely unchanged from his initial concept art. Once his design was finalized, Red's appearance was used as a template for the designs of all other Wonderful Ones.[2]
- When coming up with ideas for Wonder-Red's character, Hideki Kamiya considered several possible occupations for Wonder-Red's civilian form. These included him being a salaryman, a shoemaker, a school teacher, and a butler.[3]
- Unite Claw weapon concept art in the in-game Gallery reveals that Red (and his father's) last name was originally spelled "Wedgwood", which is a habitational surname of English origins.
- Wonder-Red has the same voice actors (Charlie Schlatter and Ryohei Kimura) as his father, Arthur Wedgewood, as well as the Secret Character, Poseman. Apart from Poseman's unique Taunt, All three characters use the same voice lines in combat.
- Wonder-Red appears as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and as a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Official replicas of Wonder-Red's Wonderful 100 ID card and his jacket were created as backer rewards in the Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered.
- Wonder-Red and Wonder-Blue's initial rivalry is an example of the "Red Oni, Blue Oni" character dynamic, where two related characters come into conflict over their opposing personalities. In this case, however, their colors are inverted, as Wonder-Red represents the more rational Blue Oni brother, whereas Wonder-Blue represents the more reckless Red Oni brother. The "Red Oni, Blue Oni" character dynamic is a common trope in Japanese storytelling, with some other examples including Dante and Vergil from the Devil May Cry series, or even elsewhere in The Wonderful 101, the GEATHJERK Officers Laambo and Walltha.
