The Total Rank system in The Wonderful 101 is a gameplay mechanic that allows Wonderful Ones to level up and increase in Rank by earning experience in combat. The Rank (sometimes referred to as Level) of each Wonderful One is then added up to form the both Total Rank of your entire team and the Rank of each group of Unite Morph users. Reaching higher Ranks unlocks various upgrades and abilities.
Overview[]
Each newly recruited Wonderful One starts at Rank 1, and can increase in Rank up to Rank 4 by earning experience:
Wonderful Ones earn experience primarily by using their Unite Morph to damage enemies in combat, either when being controlled as the team leader or while performing a Multi-Unite attack. Additionally, when using a Unite Morph, all other users of the same Unite Morph earn small amounts of experience as well.
Wonderful Ones also earn experience by performing other Unite Morphs such as Unite Guts, by performing special environmental interactions such as riding the attractions in Operation 002-B, and by using Enemy Weapons to attack enemies.
It's also important to mention that only real Wonderful Ones are given ranks and can level up: Temporary Members do not contribute to the Total Rank system in any way.
The ultimate purpose of increasing the Rank of your team members is to unlock new upgrades and abilities: as you increase the Total Rank of your entire team and the Rank of each group of Unite Morph users, you'll unlock Vitality Upgrades, additional Custom Block Slots, new Skills, and other special abilities.
Version Differences[]
While mechanically identical in both versions of the game, how the Rank system is displayed in-game is a significant version difference between the Wii U and Remastered versions of the game:
In the Wii U version of the game, the Ranks and experience bars of each individual member can be viewed by highlighting them on the Leader Select screen. Additionally, the Total Rank of your team can be viewed on a progress bar found in the Custom section of the pause menu, where it is referred to as points. The notches on this progress bar indicate the required number of points to "level up" your Shirogane Drive, which unlocks a new Custom Slot.
Additionally, when a Wonderful One increases in Rank, their actual level is not mentioned, only the fact that they've ranked up, and when unlocking any new upgrade, the Rank that was reached to unlock the upgrade in question is not displayed.
By comparison, the Remastered version of the game more convenient and far less cryptic about the Rank system: the Total Rank of your entire team and the Ranks of each group of Unite Morph users are all prominently displayed on progress bars on the Radar Panel of the Subscreen. The notches on each progress bar indicate the required Rank to unlock all new upgrades. Similar to the Wii U version, the Rank of each individual member is displayed as a number next to their icon in the Leader Select screen, and highlighting them reveals their experience bar.
As with the Wii U version, the total rank of your team can still be viewed in the Custom section of the pause menu, on a progress bar identical to the progress bar displayed on the Radar Panel.
Unlike the Wii U version, when a Wonderful One increases in rank their actual level is displayed, and when any new upgrade is unlocked, the Rank that was reached to unlock the upgrade in question is clearly displayed as an on-screen message.
Increasing Rank[]
Since Wonderful Ones earn experience just by dealing damage in combat, they naturally level up over time simply through playing the game normally. However, you'll most likely want to speed up this process and maximize your Total Rank to obtain all the available upgrades as quickly as possible, and there are good ways to do this:
When trying to level up your entire team at once, the best way of doing so is by replaying Operation 002-B on Very Easy: each time the level is played, every member of the team will earn moderate amounts of experience the first time they ride the attractions at the start of the level. To do this, simply start the level ensuring every team member rides the water slide, complete Mission 001, ensure every team member rides the Ferris wheel, and then complete Mission 002 to auto-save, saving your progress so you can restart the level and repeat the process. Doing this will also get you large amounts of Space Vegetables, which will be useful for earning the Mix Master Bottle-Cap.
Note that although this is an easy way of leveling up your entire team, riding the attractions in Operation 002-B becomes inefficient once most of your team reaches Rank 4, and leveling up members individually will eventually become faster.
To level up individual members of your team, the first thing you should do is use the Leader Select Menu on the Subscreen to select underleveled Wonderful Ones as the default users of each Unite Morph, and then focus on using them in combat while playing through levels, remembering to switch the default users to a new character after they reach Rank 4.
Since Wonderful Ones earn experience primarily through dealing damage, they naturally earn more experience faster if you use max size Unite Morphs to deal larger amounts of damage to enemies. However, it's also very important to make use of Enemy Weapons: using Enemy Weapons to deal damage also earns large amounts of experience, potentially more than actually using a Unite Morph in the case of Unite Morphs that deal little damage, namely Unite Gun, Unite Claw, and Unite Bomb (special mention to Wonder-Gramps, whose Unite Bomb literally deals no damage.) With this in mind, any time you acquire an Enemy Weapon, you should switch to a user of one of these Unite Morphs before you start using it to make the most out of the large amounts of experience they provide.
In the case of Unite Gun and Unite Bomb, there are two important things to mention:
Unite Gun's Pistol and Bazooka forms deal very little damage, making them slow to level up (and a very good candidate for using Enemy Weapons to earn experience more quickly,) however, once Unite Gun's Wonderful Cyclone Skill is unlocked, the massive damage dealt by performing Wonderful Cyclone in contact with enemies allows you to level up your Unite Gun users extremely quickly if abused.
Unite Bomb is slow to use and deals small amounts of damage, however, Unite Bomb users will actually earn small amounts of experience any time other Unite Morphs are used to attack enemies slowed by a Unite Bomb. With this in mind, going out of your way to level up your Unite Bomb users should be saved for last, as at first you can earn experience for your Unite Bomb users simply by remembering to toss Multi-United Bombs as you're leveling up your other Unite Morph users.
