Gameplay Overview[]

The Wonderful One: After School Hero is a side-scrolling run and gun platformer focused around 360° shooting using Luka's personal weapon, the Stingy Eye, to defeat enemies. Defeating enemies earns points and increases a combo counter for each enemy killed without taking damage. The Stingy Eye has 3 selectable firing modes: An orange long range and fast firing shot basic shot, a pink slow traveling reflective shot that can bounce off surfaces and piece enemies, and a red low range power/multi shot that deals heavy damage.

In addition to Luka's basic abilities, there are also "Power-Up Tickets" which can be used to render Luka invincible and increase the power of his Stingy Eyes, and "Unite Morph Cards" that can be used to receive support from the seven main Wonderful Ones (or even all of them at once.) The Unite Morph Card effects are as follows:

Wonder-Red: Damages all enemies.
Wonder-Blue: Laser briefly stuns enemies.
Wonder-Green: Stuns aerial enemies.
Wonder-Pink: Pulls in items/stuns bosses.
Wonder-Yellow: Stuns enemies on the ground.
Wonder-White: Brief dash invincibility.
Wonder-Black: Briefly slows down enemies.
Team Attack: Damages/slows down enemies.

There is also a "Reward Gauge" on the bottom left of the screen that can be filled by collecting O-Parts, which can be found strewn about in levels or gathered from defeated enemies and damaged bosses. Filling this gauge earns Extra Lives, Power-Up Tickets, Unite Morph Cards, and the ability to rescue citizens faster.

Content[]

The add-on version of The Wonderful One: After School Hero can be accessed from the main game's title screen.

After School Hero features 3 separate game modes, and all three game modes feature Online Rankings, allowing players to share their point scores online and view the high scores of other players. These leaderboards are separated between the Switch, PS4, and Steam versions of the game.

Arcade Mode[]

Arcade Mode is The Wonderful One: After School Hero's story mode. Similar to the main game's Operations, the levels and chapters in After School Hero are called Drills, which are also further split up into multiple parts. Between parts 1 and 2 of the game, there's a total of 12 story Drills:

Drill 1 Saving Blossom City (Blossom City Outskirts)
Drill 1-1 Virtual Reality
Drill 1-2 Hero Skills To The Test!
Drill 1-3 Vs. Chew Dough-Goo
Drill 2 Preventing Mt. Ogretoe Eruption (Mt. Ogretoe: Lost City of Lowrule)
Drill 2-1 Hot'n High Mt. Ogretoe
Drill 2-2 A bug In The System
Drill 2-3 I see You, Diedough-Goo!
Drill 3 Pursuing the Truth (Gocken Island)
Drill 3-1 Catastrophe!
Drill 3-2 Sue Is Trapped?!
Drill 3-3 Kuzzler Strikes! Scary!
Drill 4 Saving the World (Blossom City: State of Emergency)
Drill 4-1 Absolute Solitude
Drill 4-2 At The End...HEROIC!
Drill 4-3 Showdown!

Drills in Arcade Mode can only be played in order. When quitting the game in the middle of Arcade Mode you have the option of continuing from your last completed Drill, or starting over from the beginning.

Arcade Mode features an unlockable cheat: the Infinite Power-Up Ticket.
Hitting all 75 names and titles found in the credits unlocks the ability to play with infinite Power-Up Tickets. To activate this cheat, input the Platinum Code while the game is paused (pause by pressing the Reward Gauge/Subscreen button and then the Menu button at the same time.) The Wonderful One: After School Hero's version of the Platinum Code is as follows:
(Controller directions are entered using the D-Pad.)

  • Switch: (While Holding ZR) Up Down Left Right X B Y A
  • PS4: (While Holding R2) Up Down Left Right Triangle Cross Square Circle
  • Steam (Controller): (While Holding RT) Up Down Left Right Y A X B
  • Steam (Keyboard and Mouse): (While Holding CTRL) W S A D Middle-Click Spacebar Right-Click Left-Click

Although using the Infinite Power-Up Ticket cheat doesn't prevent you from uploading your score to the leaderboards when you complete Arcade Mode, your score will be reduced to 0 in any Drill you used the cheat in.
The Infinite Power-Up Ticket cheat can only be used in Arcade Mode. It also must be unlocked before it can be used.

Challenge Mode[]

Challenge Mode is unlocked after completing Drill 1-1 in Arcade Mode. Unlike Arcade Mode, which is always played in order, Challenge Mode allows you to freely select any Drill that has already been completed in Arcade Mode to achieve high scores and to complete a variety of Drill-specific Tasks.
There also are 4 bonus Drills that can only be played in Challenge Mode: these four bonus Drills are each unlocked after completing the set of Drills they correspond to in Arcade Mode.

Blossom City Outskirts
Drill 1-EX Soaring Skyscrapers
Mt. Ogretoe: Lost City of Lowrule
Drill 2-EX Scorching Hell Trap!
Gocken Island
Drill 3-EX Hell's Freezin' Over!
Blossom City: State of Emergency
Drill 4-EX Final Laser Battle

Caravan Mode[]

Caravan Mode is unlocked after completing Arcade Mode. In Caravan mode, you have 5 minutes (300 seconds) to earn as many points and complete as many Drills as possible, starting from Drill 1-1.

Story[]

Part 1[]

Near the end of a school day at Blossom City Elementary School, Luka has his student ID card returned to him by his classmate, Sue, who also reminds him about her upcoming birthday party, only for Luka to rush off.

Arriving at the CENTINELS Blossom City Field Office, Luka meets up with P-Star, who has been conducting his training to become a Wonderful One. Luka admits he's having trouble balancing his social life with his new responsibilities, and P-Star informs him that he's ready to begin Virtual Reality training. Granting Luka his personal weapon, the Stingy Eye, P-Star sends Luka into VR Subspace using his student ID card, which doubles as a CENTINELS security card. Luka's first VR training session, which is modeled after Blossom City Outskirts, is completed as expected.

The following day at Blossom City Elementary, Sue once again has to remind Luka about her birthday party and asks him to walk her home, only for Luka to rush off alone to his next training session.

P-Star informs Luka that his next VR training session will be a Drill modeled after Strato Port, but he also notices unusual behavior from the training program before they begin. Luke insists on starting his training anyway, and when he does so the program erroneously loads a Drill modeled after Mt. Ogretoe, to P-Star's surprise. Despite this, the training continues as normal, until P-Star realizes that the Drill does not exist in the training database, and that it appears to have created itself. P-Star urges Luka to finish quickly, as the program is somehow protecting itself from being shut down. Just before completing Drill 2-3, Luka notices a civilian resembling Sue before the training program starts to go out of control, as it's been hijacked by Wanna, who somehow survived his defeat in Operation 003-C.

Having taken control of the training program, Wanna starts a digital storm, sending Luka flying through subspace. Meanwhile, it's revealed that Sue has somehow become trapped inside the VR program at her home.

Part 2[]

Some time after being blown away by the digital storm, P-Star succeeds in locating Luka within the program. P-Star reveals that Wanna has hacked the CENTINELS mainframe with the goal of obtaining control of every computer on Earth, which Luka suspects was made possible by Wanna tampering with his ID card (that he frequently loses.) Despite Luka blaming himself for this catastrophe, P-Star urges him to seek out an escape portal so that the CENTINELS network can be shut down and deleted, eliminating Wanna in the process.

As Luka completes Drills modeled after Gocken Island, he repeatedly encounters the civilian resembling Sue, and becomes worried for the real person. P-Star assumes Wanna corrupted the character database, but Luka requests P-Star to check in on Sue at her home anyway. After finishing the Drills and escaping from the VR Program, Luka returns to the real world to find Sue's unconscious body taken to the CENTINELS Field Office, showing signs that her mind has become trapped in the VR Subspace as a result of Wanna managing to hack her student ID card.

Despite the danger posed by allowing the compromised VR training program to continue running, Luka resolves to re-enter the VR Subspace to not only rescue Sue, but to also take out Wanna personally. P-Star grants Luka 15 minutes to enter the program and complete his mission before he shuts down the program, whether he makes it back out or not.

Arriving in the VR Subspace, which at this point has been scrambled to the point that it now resembles Operation 008 Blossom City: State of Emergency, Luka eventually locates Sue, but she disappears as Wanna reveals himself and begins a battle. After being defeated, Wanna is corrupted by the system and revives as a monstrous virus for a final battle. After defeating Virus-Wanna for good, Luka finds Sue and escorts her to the escape portal as the subspace beings to collapse completely, but not before she thanks him for rescuing her and compliments his goggles, the Stingy-Eye.

Back at Blossom Elementary School, after everything is over, Sue believes the whole ordeal was simply a dream, but she's convinced she recognizes the hero from somewhere. Once school is out, Sue reminds Luka about her birthday tomorrow one last time, and Luka promises he'll come before running off again. When Luka arrives at the CENTINELS Field Office for training that day, P-Star informs him that he only has his final review Drill left to complete, but he's confident that after his heroics he'll be accepted into the ranks of the Wonderful Ones. P-Star asks Luka if he's decided on a codename yet, to which Luka readily replies: Wonder-Goggles.

(Based on the updated title screen for completing the story, Luka did indeed make it to Sue's birthday party.)
