Diplomacy has failed, this article is a stub! You can help The Wonderful 101 Wiki by expanding it. |
- This article is about the development, crowdfunding campaign, and version differences of the Remastered version of The Wonderful 101. For general information about the game, see The Wonderful 101 (Game)
The Wonderful 101: Remastered is an enhanced version of The Wonderful 101 released for the Nintendo Switch, Windows (Steam), and PlayStation 4. It is PlatinumGames' first self-published title, and features improved technical performance, interface and gameplay improvements, and exclusive new content. Most notably, unlike the original version of the game which released exclusively on the Nintendo Wii U, PlatinumGames' efforts to self-publish the game allowed The Wonderful 101: Remastered to receive a multi-platform release.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered was officially announced on February 3rd 2020 through a Kickstarter campaign lasting one month, ending on March 6th 2020. The campaign, which PlatinumGames revealed was intended to gauge the popularity of The Wonderful 101 and to reunite fans of the game[1], featured several funding stretch goals to add additional content to the game, a number of backer reward tiers offering a variety of merchandise, the reveal of behind-the-scenes information about the The Wonderful 101, and a series of social media challenges called The Defense of Blossom City.
The campaign successfully concluded on March 6th 2020 with a final total of 33,199 backers pledging ¥235,320,528 — officially surpassing its $2.25 million dollar stretch goal.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered was released early to backers on May 7, 2020, roughly two weeks before its first official releases on May 19th in North America and May 22nd in Europe, and a month before its release in Japan on June 11th.
History[]
Background and Development[]
Despite the poor sales of The Wonderful 101 on the Nintendo Wii U, PlatinumGames expressed interest in porting The Wonderful 101 to the Nintendo Switch as early as 2018,[2] and teased such a rerelease on social media as early as 2017.[3]
Around February 1st 2020, leaks had begun to circulate that PlatinumGames was preparing to rerelease The Wonderful 101 through a Kickstarter campaign, and at the time it was believed that the game would receive a multi-platform release for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[4]
On February 3rd 2020, PlatinumGames officially announced and launched the Kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, which targeted a Nintendo Switch release as its first stretch goal, a Windows (Steam) and PlayStation 4 version as the second and third stretch goals (respectively), and further stretch goals to add additional content to the game. The campaign also offered backers various rewards and social media incentives (described in detail in the Kickstarter Campaign section of this page.)
The campaign concluded on March 6, 2020 with a final total of 33,199 backers pledging ¥235,320,528 — officially surpassing its $2.25 million dollar stretch goal.
The multi-platform release of The Wonderful 101: Remastered came as a surprise, as Nintendo was known to be co-owner of the copyright and sole owner of the trademark of The Wonderful 101, and they would have been believed to want to release the game exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. This has sparked theories that Platinum may have obtained full rights to the IP from Nintendo, although neither company was willing to provide details about this subject.[5] The revised in-game credits in the Remaster, which omitted all mention of Nintendo, do not provide information about the game's ownership, either.
It was later revealed in an interview with Atsushi Inaba that during the early stages of the Remaster's development, PlatinumGames considered the possibility of releasing the game on multiple platforms to increase its chances of success. When Platinum approached Nintendo with this idea, Nintendo permitted the game to be released on other platforms, however, Platinum would have to be responsible for the game's publishing, as Nintendo was only willing to publish the game if it were exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. Inaba described this opportunity as an "exclusive case" resulting from Platinum's good relationship with Nintendo.[6]
As PlatinumGames had at this point already expressed an interest in self-publishing their future games, the company chose to publish the remaster themselves — an endeavor facilitated by a capital investment that they received from Tencent Holdings in January 2020.[7] PlatinumGames also partnered with Nighthawk Interactive for support with publishing the game.
According to the FAQ section of The Wonderful 101: Remastered's Kickstarter page, the development of all three versions of the game was already nearly completed by the time the campaign launched, and as such the funding obtained from the campaign was not necessary for the development of the core game.[8] Instead, Atsushi Inaba clarified that the campaign was intended to gauge the popularity of The Wonderful 101 and to reunite fans of the game,[9] and that funds raised during the campaign went towards covering publishing costs and the development of the campaign's stretch goals and backer rewards.
As The Wonderful 101 was considered to be a game heavily tied into the use of the Wii U Gamepad's touch screen display, concerns about how the Remaster would accommodate the lack of a second screen were frequently raised.
In an interview, Hideki Kamiya stated that although some elements of the touch screen would be preserved in the Remaster (particularly in the Nintendo Switch version in portable mode), the Wii U version also supported drawing with the analog stick as an alternative (what he considered to be the preferred input method), and that using the analog stick would become the primary input method in the Remaster. He also mentioned The Wonderful 101's "picture-in-picture" option, which allowed the game to be played with all information on one screen, removing the need for a second screen. This mode was a late addition to the original Wii U version, but was vastly improved in the Remaster. This was in addition to various other improvements and fixes to The Wonderful 101 that Kamiya claimed would "modernize" the game.[10] (known changes are described in detail on the Version Differences section on this page.)
Release[]
While the Kickstarter campaign's funding period was completed successfully, the actual release of the The Wonderful 101: Remastered experienced complications arising from the starting COVID-19 pandemic. According to backer reward descriptions on the Kickstarter's page, the game was originally projected to be released in April 2020, but was ultimately delayed to May 19th in North America, May 22nd in Europe, and June 11th in Japan.
Meanwhile, backers were planned to receive their copies of the game early on May 7th. Digital copies were distributed early as planned (albeit some regions experienced download code issues[11][12]), however, due to shipping delays caused by COVID, the physical copies that were planned to be shipped early were not able to be shipped until after the retail release of the game. Backers affected by the delay to their physical copies were sent a free Steam download code for the Windows version of the game as compensation.[13]
Also included in the delays were much of the Kickstarter's backer rewards, which as of 2024 have still not all been distributed. (More information about the distribution of backer rewards can be found in the Backer Tiers and Rewards section on this page.)
The release of the game's stretch goal content went as follows:
- The Time Attack DLC released on June 15, 2021.
- The Remix Soundtrack, The Wonderful 101 Remixed, released digitally on June 2nd 2022.
- Luka's First Mission and Luka's Second Mission released as Part 1 and Part 2 of The Wonderful One: After School Hero on May 19th 2023 and May 26th 2023, respectively.
- The Orchestral Recordings of "The Won-Stoppable Wonderful 100" and "Tables Turn" were included in the game on release.
Additionally, a free demo for The Wonderful 101: Remastered was released on November 30th 2020 to promote the game.

Though PlatinumGames acknowledged the possibility of releasing The Wonderful 101: Remastered to additional platforms in the future, the game has yet to be ported to other platforms. By far the most commonly requested platform for the game is the Xbox One, mainly as a result of the console being mistakenly included when the campaign was leaked by outside sources.
Version Differences[]
The Wonderful 101: Remastered features numerous changes from the original Wii U Version of the game. These include control and interface improvements (mainly to facilitate the lack of a second screen), various game balance changes, other miscellaneous minor changes, as well as the addition of exclusive new content. There are also technical differences between the Nintendo Switch, Windows, and PlayStation 4 versions of the Remaster.
The following is a list of all known version differences in The Wonderful 101: Remastered:
Nintendo[]
All direct mentions of Nintendo, including their logo, copyright, and employee credits, have been removed from all versions of the remaster (including the Nintendo Switch version). Removals and changes include:
- Nintendo's Logo in the Prologue's opening credits. (replaced by a screen distance and room brightness warning)
- Hitoshi Yamagami's producer credit in the Prologue's opening credits. (replaced with "Remastered by The Wonderful 101 Remastered Staff")
- Hitoshi Yamagami's producer credit in Team Wonderful in the playable credits. (replaced with "Created By The Wonderful 101 Remastered Staff & Original Staff")
- Nintendo employee credits listed in the debug team in the end credits.
- The entire "Nintendo section" of the end credits. (replaced with "Based on the work of The Wonderful 101 Development Staff")
- Nintendo's copyright in the end credits.
- The 2012/2013 Nintendo Direct Trailer tracks in the Sound Gallery were renamed to 2012/2013 Promotional Trailer.
Note that, while direct mentions of Nintendo have been removed from the game, the various references to Nintendo remain untouched, such as Wonder-Gamer's Nintendo Famicom-themed CENTINEL-Suit, or the "3-DS" and "3-DS-XL" Jerk-matter drives described in Wallgah-Goojin's GEATHJERK File.
Exclusive Content[]
- Wonderful Codes: A series of new cheat codes making it possible to obtain items and unlock secret Wonderful Ones early. Wonderful Codes were added to the base game after an update.
- Time Attack: A free downloadable time trial game mode designed to allow players to compete at completing any Operation in the game's story mode as quickly as possible. The creation of this add-on was a stretch goal in the Remaster's crowdfunding campaign.
- The Prince Vorkken (DLC): A paid downloadable game mode that can be enabled in story mode to allow you to play through the game as Prince Vorkken, with access to all of Vorkken's abilities as seen in his boss fights. The Prince Vorkken can also be used in Time Attack.
- The Wonderful One: After School Hero: A free downloadable story expansion featuring side-scrolling run and gun platformer gameplay, with 12 levels of story content, 4 extra bonus levels, and alternate game modes. The creation of this add-on was a stretch goal in the Remaster's crowdfunding campaign.
The Wonderful One: After School Hero is also available to purchase as a standalone game, which is freely available to owners of The Wonderful 101: Remastered.
Technical Differences[]
- Load times have been improved dramatically in the Remaster.
- The game's frame rate is more consistent than it was on Wii U, achieving 60 frames per second with fewer slowdowns.
- The Nintendo Switch Version still experiences some slowdowns comparable to the Wii U version at parts, though less severe.
- The Windows version of the remaster suffers from a frame pacing issue that causes the frame rate to cap at 59FPS and become unstable over time. (See SilentPatch (TW101R) for more information and an unofficial fix.)
- The Wonderful 101 ran at a 1280×720 screen resolution on Wii U. Each version of the remaster runs at the following resolutions:
- The Nintendo Switch version runs at 1920×1080 in docked mode or 1280×720 in handheld mode.
- The Windows version officially supports up to 1920×1080. Options for higher resolutions, such as 4K or ultra-wide, are available in the settings, but may cause issues when used. (See High Resolution Glitches for more information.)
- The PlayStation 4 version runs at 1920×1080.
- The PC version of the Remaster removes support for gyro camera control.
Gameplay Changes[]
System Changes[]
- The Subscreen, the second screen that was displayed on the Wii U GamePad in the Wii U version of The Wonderful 101, now features several new display options to accommodate playing the Remaster on a single screen, as well as other related interface improvements:
- In the Remaster, the Subscreen is initially hidden. You can display or hide the Subscreen manually, but it also opens automatically when viewing certain menus or when entering gameplay areas that require the use of the Subscreen.
- The Subscreen can now be navigated entirely using controller inputs, unlike in the Wii U version where much of its menu interactions could only be done using the GamePad's touch screen.
- By default, the Subscreen appears as a "Picture-In-Picture" (PiP) overlay on the bottom right region of the main screen. This option existed in the Wii U version as an alternative to using the Wii U GamePad, however in the Remaster it now also possesses additional customization options:
- The Subscreen can be freely resized or moved to any area of the screen.
- The Subscreen's transparency can be set to High, Normal, or Low in the game's settings, allowing you to control how much it obstructs gameplay and other menus while open. When the Subscreen is in use, it turns fully opaque.
- New to the Remaster is the "Dual Mode" display option for the Subscreen, which instead of overlaying screens now places the main screen and Subscreen side-by-side. Dual mode includes the option to scale the sizes of both screens relative to each other, as well as 4 background options to fill in unused screen space.
- The option to manually swap the Subscreen and main screen has been removed from the Remaster. Instead, the game now swaps screens automatically when entering certain areas during gameplay.
- During gameplay, the Subscreen menus have been re-organized:
- The Input Panel, which allowed you to draw the Wonder-Liner using the GamePad's touch screen, has had its touch input functionality removed, and was renamed to the Radar Panel. The Radar Panel now also displays useful information about the Total Rank system.
- The Subscreen now opens on the Leader Select Screen by default, instead of the Input/Radar Panel, making it easier to view and select your team members.
- The Wonder-Liner, which originally could be drawn using the Wii U GamePad's touch screen, can now be drawn using the following methods unique to each version of the Remaster:
(This is in addition to using the right analog stick to draw the Wonder-Liner, which works in any version of the game.)- The Switch version can use the Switch's touch screen to draw when playing in Handheld mode.
- The PlayStation 4 version can use the DualShock 4's touch pad to draw.
- The PC version can draw by moving the mouse with the left Alt key held.
- The Remaster includes various interface improvements specifically to make the Total Rank system easier to understand, as it was considered to be a confusing mechanic in the Wii U version:
- The on-screen message for when a Wonderful One increases in rank now actually displays their name and new rank.
- The on-screen message for unlocking a new upgrade through the Total Rank system now clearly states that the upgrade was unlocked by reaching a certain Rank, and it now also displays the exact Rank that was reached to unlock the upgrade in question.
- The Leader Select Screen now displays the rank of each individual Wonderful One more clearly.
- The Total Rank of your entire team and the Ranks of each group of Unite Morph users are now prominently displayed on progress bars on the Radar Panel of the Subscreen. This is in addition to the progress bar that could already be found on the CUSTOM section of the pause menu.
- These progress bars also include additional notches indicating the required Ranks to unlock every upgrade. In the Wii U version, the notches on the Total Rank progress bar only indicated the required Total Ranks to unlock additional Custom slots and nothing else.
- The Remaster adds additional tutorial messages in certain situations to better guide new players. For example, viewing the Wonderful Mart for the first time explicitly encourages players to purchase Unite Guts and Unite Spring, and trying to leave without purchasing these essential abilities will have the game ask the player to confirm their choice first. Other new tutorial messages may be found throughout the game as well.
- Several cutscenes which were unskippable in the Wii U version of the game, such as Unlimited Form cutscenes, were made skippable in the Remaster.
- The input for Taunting by clicking and holding the left analog stick has been removed from the Remaster, meaning it is now only possible to taunt by holding the Attack button and the Team Attack button at the same time.
- Unique to the PC version is the option to taunt by holding the Z key.
- The Platinum Code, a cheat code present in all versions of The Wonderful 101, has had its inputs inverted from their original inputs in the Wii U version. (see Platinum Code for a full list of inputs for every version of the game.)
- Wonderful Missions, which are now called Multiplayer Missions, are now limited to a maximum of 4 players instead of 5, as the Wii U version relied on the Wii U GamePad to allow a 5th player to join.
Balance Changes[]
- The ability to create Multi-Unite Morphs must now first be purchased from the Wonderful Mart in the Remaster, whereas in the Wii U version the ability was available by default.
- Note that Multi-Unite I is automatically obtained for free when playing the Remaster with The Prince Vorkken (DLC) installed.
- When playing on the Easy or Very Easy Difficulty levels in the Remaster, attacking armored or blocking enemies no longer causes Unite Morphs to break on contact, making combat against enemies such as Hoedowns much easier. (There are exceptions where Unite Morphs can still break.)
- The Full Automatic Custom Block is now obtained by default at the start of the game in the Remaster. Additionally, if either the Easy or Very Easy Difficulty level is selected when playing the game for the first time in a new save file, the Custom Block will also be automatically equipped. In the Wii U version, the Custom Block was obtained by playing the game on Easy or Very Easy, which would also automatically equip it.
- When failing a Kahkoo-regah Secret Mission in the Remaster, selecting YES to RETRY no longer results in a continue penalty on the Operation Results screen. In the Wii U version, selecting YES to RETRY would result in a penalty, despite that the fact that exiting the Kahkoo-regah by selecting NO after failing it and then simply re-entering it allowed you to retry it without any penalties anyway.
- The You Can Hole Up, But You Can't Hide Bottle-Cap now only requires you to find every Kahkoo-regah location on any Difficulty level, whereas in the Wii U version it required to you find every individual Kahkoo-regah on Normal, Hard, and 101% Hard. This change makes it significantly easier to unlock Immorta.
Other Changes[]
- The orchestral versions of "The Won-Stoppable Wonderful 100/101" and "Tables Turn" play instead of their original versions during gameplay. The original versions still remain available to listen to in the Sound Gallery. Secretly, it is also possible to toggle between playing the orchestral and original versions during gameplay by using the Platinum Code.
- Due to an apparent oversight, the soundtrack toggle does not work in the PS4 version of the game.
- Four Minor Wonderful Ones (Wonder-Yang, Wonder-Tombstone, Wonder-Motorbike, and Wonder-Fixit) within Operation 008 have been moved to different locations. These four characters are the only "collectibles" in the entire game to have had their locations altered in the Remaster.
- Inserting the Wonder-Liner into Wonderful Toilets, Wonder Holes, and Unite Builds has been made noticeably more reliable. In particular, interactions requiring 100 members have been made significantly easier to complete, as they were known to be extremely finicky in the Wii U version.
- After completing the game for the first time, the recruitment cutscenes for the other 5 main Wonderful Ones (Green, Pink, Yellow, White, and Black) will now play again every time their Mission is replayed. In the Wii U version, these cutscenes only played once per save file.
Miscellaneous[]
- The Steam and PlayStation 4 versions of the Remaster include 100 Steam Achievements and 51 PlayStation Network Trophies, respectively. These Achievements/Trophies are all based on existing achievements from the Bottle-Cap Collection, an in-game achievement system present in all versions of The Wonderful 101.
- Certain other names and descriptions have been changed:
- The Wonderful 101's multiplayer mode, Wonderful Missions, was renamed to Multiplayer Missions.
- The final Bottle-Cap achievement, Wonderfully Wonderful Player, was renamed to Platinum Forever!
- The following Bottle-Caps had their requirement texts slightly altered: They Are... The Wonderful 101!, Hero in Training, Wonderful Hero, and 101% Wonderful Hero.
- The Normal Difficulty level's description has been changed from "For those who stick to the book and like it that way." to "For those expecting the Platinum standard."
- All language options are included in all regional releases of the Remaster. In the Wii U version, only the American and Japanese releases included English and Japanese text options, whereas the European release instead included English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish text options. Additionally, the Remaster includes both English text options from the American and European translations of the game, which are listed separately as "English (US)" and "English (UK)" and contain minor spelling differences.
- Miiverse features were removed from the Remaster, and in place of in-game prompts to make posts to Miiverse after every Mission or Operation, the Remaster added the Most Wonderful Player (MWP) screen, which displays the Wonderful One that was used the most during a Mission or Operation. The MWP feature serves no real purpose, and only exists as an extra detail.
- The Wonderful 101: Remastered supports transferring save files from the Wonder-Size Cadet Demo, and the game will check for any existing demo save files on your system any time a new save file is created.
Kickstarter Campaign[]
The funding period of The Wonderful 101: Remastered's Kickstarter campaign lasted for 31 days, from February 3rd 2020 to March 6th 2020. During the campaign, PlatinumGames partnered with The Yetee to aid in organization and eventually reward fulfillment.
The campaign included several funding stretch goals to add additional content to the game, backer reward tiers offering a wide variety of merchandise, the reveal of behind-the-scenes information about the The Wonderful 101, and a social media challenge called "The Defense of Blossom City".
According to the Kickstarter campaign page, the campaign concluded with 33,199 backers pledging ¥235,320,528. When combined with the additional funds obtained from the campaign's closing stream, the campaign officially surpassed $2.25 million in funding.
Following the completion of the campaign's funding period, backer rewards (including the game itself) were distributed over the following months, with many rewards being delayed for extended periods of time due to various complications, mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although no rewards have been cancelled, as of 2024, several physical backer rewards are still in active production and/or awaiting distribution.
Stretch Goals[]
The Wonderful 101: Remastered's campaign included several funding stretch goals. The campaign's minimum goal of $50k was to release the game on the Nintendo Switch, after which its second and third stretch goals were for releasing the game on other platforms, namely to Windows (Steam) for $250k and the Playstation 4 for $500k. The remaining stretch goals focused primarily on adding additional content to the game.
Within 24 hours, the campaign surpassed $1 million in funding,[14] and ultimately surpassed roughly $2.25 million at the end of the campaign's funding period, successfully reaching the $2.25 million stretch goal. This was from a combination of funds obtained directly from Kickstarter, and also donations obtained from the campaign's closing stream.[15]
As of the release of Part 2 of The Wonderful One: After School Hero on May 26th 2023, all content promised by the reached stretch goals have been released.
During the campaign, up to two new stretch goals were revealed at a time. The following is a list of every stretch goal revealed by PlatinumGames:

Backer Tiers and Rewards[]
The campaign initially launched with 16 available backer tiers, whose rewards ranged from simply obtaining a copy of the game, to receiving a variety of exclusive merchandise, and to other special rewards.
Over the course of the campaign, 10 additional tiers were added: these additional tiers were either "Remix" tiers, which where duplicates of previously filled limited quantity tiers giving backers a second chance to obtain their rewards (albeit at a higher price due to production cost concerns), or entirely new tiers added at the requests of fans.
Regardless of tier, backers also received copies of the game early on May 7th 2020. This was planned to include both physical and digital copies, however, complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the shipment of physical copies to well after the retail release of the game. Backers affected by delays to their physical copies were issued a free Steam download code for the Windows version of the game as compensation.[18]
Additionally, all physical copies of the game distributed through the campaign shipped with backer exclusive box art in the form of a lenticular slip cover.
Per the Kickstarter page's rewards descriptions, all backer rewards were originally planned to have been distributed by November 2020. However, due to complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and other difficulties, the plans for distributing the rewards were delayed and reworked into a multi-phase release timeline. This new timeline originally consisted of shipping "Phase 1" rewards in December 2020, and "Phase 2" rewards in June 2021: [19]
Phase 1 ended up releasing mostly as planned, however, Phase 2 experienced heavy delays, and was ultimately revised into a "Phase 2.5" with rewards releasing as they become ready to ship.[20] As of 2024, several Phase 2.5 rewards are still in active production and/or awaiting distribution.
All available tiers, their prices, and their rewards were as follows:

The Defense of Blossom City[]
I could have sworn that the guidebook says...

Diplomacy has failed, this article is a stub! You can help The Wonderful 101 Wiki by expanding it. |
The Defense of Blossom City was a series of social media challenges that backers could complete during the campaign. These challenges lasted for the duration of the crowdfunding period of the campaign, and were primarily focused on promoting the campaign by uploading content to Twitter using the "#ALLFOR101" hashtag, retweeting an official Twitter post, or reaching a certain number of likes/views on official YouTube videos and Facebook posts. For every challenge completed, backers would receive various rewards. A total of 12 challenges (called missions) were posted, and all except for Mission 7 were completed successfully.
The Defense of Blossom City also included a "Wonder Power" system where, for every 500 backers, the size of the Wonderful Team would grow by 1 member, reducing the difficulty of certain challenges. The campaign finished with a final Wonder Power of 65.
The challenges were revealed every day after the previous challenge was completed (or marked incomplete, in the case of Mission 7), with the exception of Mission 12, which was revealed early to be a cosplay challenge after reaching a Wonder Power of 7, giving backers time to prepare.
The Defense of Blossom City's 12 challenges were as follows:
