Recruiting Temporary Members is one of The Wonderful 101's core gameplay mechanics. Doing so allows you to increase the number of members in your team within levels, and also offers a variety of other gameplay bonuses.

Temporary Members come in three main forms: citizens, enemies, and temporary story characters.

Citizens[]

Civilians

Your average Jill or Joe

"The Wonder-Liner extends the Wonderful Ones' Wonder-Energy to ordinary citizens,
electroplating them with Tiny Wonder-Masks that both protect and transform the citizenry into Wonderful reinforcements.
"
― Narrator, Operation 000 Prologue

Citizens (or civilians) can be found almost anywhere in the game seeking help, from running around out in the open, knocked out from nearby disasters, captured inside of traps like Gatchas, and many other harrowing situations.
In the case of GDA Soldiers, they sometimes actually enter the battle with you to provide support, particularly in Boss battles where GDA reinforcements may be the only source of "citizens" available.

It's important to note that citizens of any type are are powerless to defend themselves and vulnerable to harm: If a citizen is attacked by an enemy or encounters any other hazard, they will be killed. There are no penalties for allowing citizens to die, but you miss out on all the benefits from saving them (and will probably feel bad about it, too.)

Whether they're in immediate danger or simply minding their own business, citizens exist in the game to be rescued by circling them using the Wonder-Liner, which has three major effects:

Citizen Recruits[]

Civilian recruits

Don that mask and take 'em to task!

Any time your team is under its maximum size within a level, any rescued citizen will receive a Tiny Wonder-Mask and become transformed into a Wonderful reinforcement for the remainder of the level. This allows you to increase your team size on the fly and to reach 100 members (or more) even without having every Minor Wonderful One recruited.
Citizen recruits receive a (mostly) random weapon and the ability to create Unite Morphs, and they function exactly the same as any real Wonderful One and are even playable if selected as the team leader, but they don't contribute to the Total Rank system in any way.

Justice Missiles[]

Civilian justice missile counter

Any citizens you rescue after your team has already reached its maximum size will be teleported away to safety aboard the Virgin Victory, removing them from harm's way. These citizens don't just go to waste however, as anyone rescued in this way will increase a counter on the bottom left of the screen: This counter indicates your progress toward unlocking a special item reward: Every 10 citizens rescue will provide you with a Justice Missile, which are powerful, single-use, long-range weapons that can be used at any time in combat.

Operation Results Bonuses[]

Rescuing citizens also provides you with multiple O-Parts bonuses on the Operation Results screen at the end of each level. Every citizen rescued in a level will provide you with bonus O-Parts (the exact amount per citizen varies per level), and there's also a second 10,000P bonus for saving at least 100 citizens in any level it's possible to do so in.

Enemy Recruits[]

"We shall fight together. That is,
if you are willing to join forces with the agents of your invaders, of course.
"
― Chewgi offering to join forces with the Wonderful Ones, Operation 007-A

Apart from plain old human citizens, it's also possible to recruit GEATHJERK invaders into the team as temporary members under certain conditions.

Dough-Goos and Chew Dough-Goos[]

When enemy Dough-Goos or Chew Dough-Goos are killed, they shine purple for a few moments before exploding. If these enemies are circled in this dying state they'll be revived and converted into a temporary member for the remainder of the level.

Dough-Goos and Chew Dough-Goos can also be recruited by collecting a GEATH-Remote, which will automatically recruit any in battle.
In the Wii U version of the game, GEATH-Remotes only affect Dough-Goos.
In the Remastered version of the game, GEATH-Remotes also recruit Chew Dough-Goos.

While a Chew Dough-Goo can simply be attacked using anything other than Unite Sword (which would instantly slice it in half) to be put into a recruitable state, it can be very tricky to put Dough-Goos into the recruitable state without simply killing them, as all basic Unite Morphs attacks knock them away to their instant deaths, as well as all items and most special attacks. The following damage sources can be used to put Dough-Goos into a recruitable state:

By far the most reliable and practical of these options is to use Dodge Mine, as a single mine explosion is enough to put Dough-Goos into their recruitable state on most Difficulty levels. Note that when using Dodge Mine, Drill Spring should be disabled as it too instantly kills Dough-Goos.

Once recruited, Dough-Goos and Chew Dough-Goos function differently from citizen recruits:

  • Recruited Dough-Goos always become Unite Gun users.
  • Recruited Chew Dough-Goos always become Unite Hand users.
  • Recruited enemies aren't playable, meaning they can never be selected as the team leader, nor can they be used to perform Multi-Unite Morphs.
  • Recruiting enemies past your team's maximum size doesn't provide progress towards receiving a Justice Missile
  • Recruiting enemies provides you with a separate O-Parts bonus during the Operation Results screen.

The Guyzoch Space Pirates[]

Guyzoch recruits

During parts of the game where the Guyzoch join forces with the Wonderful Ones, members of the Guyzoch are considered to be enemy recruits according to the Operation Results screen. Despite being considered enemy recruits, they function like regular civilian recruits in that they are playable and have access to a wide variety of Unite Morphs.

Gah-Goojins[]

Gah-goojin recruit 2

Gah-Goojins appear en masse as weak cannon fodder enemies during Operation 009's on-foot Platinum Robo sections. These "small" versions of Gah-Goojin pose little to no threat to Platinum Robo, but they are significant in that they can be "recruited" by knocking them out with any attack so that they can be hijacked by a Wonderful One, allowing you to build a giant robot team capable of performing High-Def Giga Unite Morphs.

Temporary Story Characters[]

"Hey, you guys are gonna go fight those aliens, right?
I know you can't do it alone...
I'll go with you.
"
― Luka joining the Wonderful Ones, Operation 003-A

As part of the game's story, certain characters join the team as temporary members for a limited number of levels or missions. Each of these temporary story characters possess a unique weapon, giving you the ability to form a unique Unite Morph for as long as they are a part your team.

Although these characters are only available within certain levels, they can all also be unlocked as Secret Wonderful Ones, making them permanent members of your team and allowing you to use their Unite Morphs in any level in the game.

Wonder-Red (Emeritus)[]

Emeritus intro card

Wonder-Red (Emeritus) is the first (and most sparingly used) temporary story character in the game. He is playable only during Mission 001 and Mission 002 of Operation 006-B and enables the use of Unite Drill: a unique close range Unite Morph similar to Unite Hand that deals damage over time by drilling into enemies.

Immorta[]

Immorta intro card

Immorta joins the team starting after Mission 003 of Operation 006-B, and is playable for the entire rest of the game excepting Operation 007, i.e: Operation 006-B, 006-C, 008-A, 008-B, 008-C, 009-A, 009-B, and 009-C.
Immorta enables the use of Unite Bowgun: a unique ranged weapon weapon that fires heart-shaped arrows with the ability to charm enemies after death, causing them to seek out other enemies and self-destruct on contact, dealing massive damage.

Chewgi[]

Chewgi arrives in 7b

Chewgi first joins the team partway through Operation 007-A, and is playable until Operation 007-B is completed, only to return later to become playable again in after Mission 004 of Operation 009-B and for the duration of Operation 009-C.
Chewgi enables the use of Unify Naginata: a unique defense oriented Unite Morph capable of repelling almost any attack that hits its spinning blade, including piercing drill attacks that would destroy Unite Guts.

Prince Vorkken[]

Vorkken returns in 9b

The newly reformed Prince Vorkken becomes playable after Mission 004 of Operation 009-B and for the duration of Operation 009-C. Vorkken enables the use of Unify Boomerang: a unique ranged Unite Morph which throws an enemy-seeking boomerang that damages anything in its path.

Wonder-Goggles[]

Luka Wonder-Goggles card

Luka is the main character of the Epilogue, and as such is playable for the entire duration of the level as Wonder-Goggles. Wonder-Goggles enables the use of Unite Goggles: a unique Unite Morph which fires a laser beam as a long range attack.

Temporary Member Types

Over the course of the game, you encounter a wide variety of characters that can be rescued or recruited into your team. These recruitable characters have a variety of appearances (Body Types) and names, and they receive a somewhat random weapon when recruited, but otherwise every character functions the same.

Citizens: ordinary citizens are found throughout every Operation except for Operation 005, 006, 007, and 009.

Students: these schoolchildren are found in the Prologue, Operation 001, Operation 008, and the Epilogue.

GDA Soldiers: Gaia Defense Army Soldiers can be found occasionally throughout the game. However, GDA Soldiers are also the primary source of temporary members in most boss levels, where they're delivered into battle with you to be recruited. Additionally, most of the GDA Soldier types only appear in Operation 009-B's first Kahkoo-regah.

Divers: divers are a unique type of citizen that only appear in Operation 004.

Explorers: these adventurous citizens are found throughout Operation 005 and Operation 006.

Natives: these are the natives of Mt. Ogretoe, and thus only appear in Operation 005.

Natives: these are the natives of Gocken Island, and thus only appear in Operation 006.

Virgin Victory Crew: these special recruits from the Virgin Victory are automatically added to your team in Operation 009-B and 009-C if you begin the levels with fewer than 100 team members.
