Nyerks are space amoebas used by the GEATHJERK Federation Supreme Armada. Because of their thick gelatinous bodies and lack of complex bodily functions, Nyerks are unique enemies that are completely unaffected by all forms of damage except for cutting and piercing attacks, and they also have the ability to immobilize prey by absorbing them into their body or by expelling sticky slime traps.
When they're first encountered in Operation 002-B, Unite Sword is the only Unite Morph capable of damaging a Nyerk, however, other Unite Morphs capable of damaging them are obtained later in the game, and some Enemy Weapons are usable against them as well.
GEATHJERK File[]
An enormous amoeba-like organism that lives in space.
Most of the time it prefers to drift in orbit around nearby planets, feeding on passing space debris. It possesses no brain, lungs, or other internal organs and shows no signs of intelligence. The only trait it is known to possess with any certainty is an insatiable desire to consume anything that comes near it. Its body courses with deadly acid that digests anything it engulfs in an instant. When threatened, it reacts by spewing this acid from its mouthlike orifice.
All of its essential life functions are concentrated in its central core, which is protected by its thick, gelatinous body, making it nearly impervious to external impacts. The only way to seriously damage it is to use sharp, penetrating attacks.
Description[]
Nyerks resemble gigantic amoebas with a fleshy red core suspended within the center of a translucent, light blue, gelatinous body. The outer surface of a Nyerk appears to be divided into a ridged middle section, and left and right outer sections that taper down towards the front of the creature and protrude slightly. When attempting to consume something, a Nyerk's outer sections outstretch and wrap around the creature's target to pull it into its body. Like other space beasts, Nyerks possess flashing rows of diamond-shaped spots all along their outer surface.
Nyerks undulate their underside to move, and they can stretch and deform to attack, including the ability extend spear-like protrusions from their body. Nyerks also have the ability to fire a laser beam from their cores, and their cores also house enough energy to explode on death.
Gameplay[]
The main aspect to fighting Nyerks is their complete immunity to most weapons. Ineffective Unite Morphs that come in direct contact with a Nyerk will bounce off of it and break, dealing no damage to the Nyerk and stunning every team member used in the attack. The only exceptions to this are Unite Hammer, which doesn't break, and Unite Bomb, which deals no damage but still slows the Nyerk.
The following is a table listing the effectiveness of any Unite Morph, Enemy Weapon, or other attack that can be used against a Nyerk:

Additionally, the effectiveness of Unite Big's forms are the same as the Unite Morphs used to create them, and all twelve Enemy-Unites from The Prince Vorkken (DLC) can damage a Nyerk.
Nyerks are also unique among normal enemies in that they're impossible to stun, they're not susceptible to Climb Attacks, they cannot be launched or thrown in any way, and they cannot be made to drop an item using the Item Catcher Custom Block.
Aside from being forced to deal with a limited weapon choice, Nyerks are fairly easy enemies to fight: their lack of any defensive ability aside from their immunities means they can be attacked at any time, and not only are most of their attacks are easy to avoid, every attack except for their jumping absorb attack can also be interrupted by directly striking their core before the attack starts, meaning in most cases you can simply rush them using any effective weapon.
Even after obtaining other weapon options, Unite Sword is generally still the best Unite Morph to use against a Nyerk, as its long reach and sweeping attacks makes hitting the core and destroying any nearby slime traps very easy, and it also lets you reflect a Nyerk's laser beam if it ever manages to get one off.
The Nyerk's most dangerous attacks are their absorption attacks: they have a deceptively long reach, and the Nyerk will turn to follow you if you try stepping to the sides, even if it's slowed by Unite Bomb or Hero Time. Unless you're already very far away from a Nyerk, you should always dodge the attack using Unite Spring as a precaution, even if it doesn't look like it'll hit.
Team members can also be hit by these attacks as well, trapping them and making them unable to be used in Unite Morphs for a few seconds, as if stunned. However, if you're using Unite Spring to avoid these attacks, it's unlikely that enough team members will ever be trapped at the same time to cause a problem.
Stepping into a slime trap will also immobilize team members in a similar way, however, they don't actually deal damage to you when the team leader is trapped, making them more of an annoyance than a threat.
As they have no blockable attacks and cannot be stunned or launched, your best options to earn a large amount of Combo points against a Nyerk are to either spam Skills to earn the + 50PTS. bonus, or to wait for their laser attack and to repeatedly dodge it using Unite Spring to earn several
+ 200PTS. bonuses. It's also possible to repeatedly reflect the same laser using Unite Sword by moving left and right to exit and reenter the path of the laser, giving you a
+ 200PTS. bonus each time, though this is trickier than simply dodging it.
Finally, when a Nyerk's health is depleted it can die in one of two ways, which seems to depend on whether or not the last attack hit its core: it may dissolve into the ground harmlessly, or its outer body may burst leaving behind its core, which will explode after a few seconds. The exploding core is easy to avoid, however, this death is significantly slower than dissolving, to the point that it should be avoided on Missions with strict Platinum time requirements.

Trivia[]

Devil's tongue jelly: slightly safer to eat than a Nyerk
- The name Nyerk is derived from "蒟蒻 (konnyaku), or "devil's tongue", a popular jelly food in Japan named after the plant it's made from.[1]
- Nyerks are also similar to Sea Angels, a group of free-swimming sea slugs.
- During development of the game, Nyerks were created from a mechanic cut from the Dahkarts enemies: Originally, Dahkarts were designed as an enemy that would initially enter battle protected inside a large slime body. Players would first have to defeat the slime to expose its core, which would then transform into the scorpion-like Dahkarts. Ultimately, it was decided that this made the Dahkarts too strong as an enemy, and so the Dahkarts' slime phase was cut and repurposed into an entirely separate enemy: the Nyerk.[2]
- This cut mechanic also explains the slight physical similarities between the angular ridges of a Nyerk's body and a curled-up Dahkarts, as they were originally a single enemy type.
- Nyerks are one of the only enemy types whose appearance does not change as they take damage.
