"You mean... Mother Platinum is..."
― Wonder-Pink Putting the pieces together, Operation 009-C
Professor Margarita Redgrave was a CENTINELS scientist and the mother of Luka. A researcher in the field of Earth Defense Technology, she was believed to be the smartest person in the history of mankind. Despite her unparalleled genius, she was unable to devise a system capable of controlling Earth's Hyper Plasma Shield. Left with no other choice, she volunteered to sacrifice herself to become the neural computer at the heart of Mother Platinum. Earth's Hyper Plasma Shield was code-named "Margarita" in her honor.
Though Professor Margarita's sacrifice did not go unrecognized by the CENTINELS, her son Luka was left in the dark about the details surrounding her death. Assuming she was killed for unknown reasons, Luka developed a burning hatred for the CENTINELS, which spiraled into a hatred for all humanity. In an ironic twist of fate, Luka sought to avenge his mother by conspiring with the GEATHJERK to destroy the very barrier she gave her life to create, only to come to regret his actions when the truth about her sacrifice was revealed to him.
Not only was Professor Margarita believed to have spiritually lived on through Earth's Hyper Plasma Shield, it's also heavily implied that Professor Margarita herself was reborn as Platinum Robo, the Unidentified Bipedal Mobile Weapon that spontaneously assembled itself from the wreckage of Blossom City in the moments before Mother Platinum's destruction.
Trivia[]
- Professor Margarita Redgrave's name is a reference to Tony Redgrave: an alias used by Dante from the Devil May Cry Series, which was originally created by Hideki Kamiya. More specifically, the name originated from the first game's prequel novel, which Kamiya was involved with writing.
- The name Redgrave is also referenced in the first Bayonetta game with the character Antonio Redgrave, the father of Luka Redgrave, whom The Wonderful 101's Luka is heavily based on. Similar to The Wonderful 101's Luka, Bayonetta's Luka incorrectly believed that his father was killed at the hands of the Umbran Witch prior to the events of the game, and sought to avenge his father until the true cause of his death was made clear.
