Luka Alan Smithee (Alternatively Luka Redgrave), or just Luka for short, is a major character in The Wonderful 101.

After repeatedly putting himself in harm's way for reasons unknown, Luka is revealed to have a mysterious connection to the CENTINELS Planetary Secret Service, and he eventually plays a critical role in deciding the fate of the Earth.

Luka first appears at the end of Operation 000 Prologue, and follows the Wonderful Ones for the remainder of the game, having a story role in almost every following Operation.

Luka returns as the main character of The Wonderful One: After School Hero, a side game following Luka's training to become a Wonderful One.

Wonderful File[]

A young Blossom City Elementary School student. Attending Wonder-Red's (Will Wedgewood's) homeroom, Luka is always fighting, playing, and ignoring his studies, making himself a constant trouble for Will. He is a bully's bully, second to none in mischief, and a problem child that has stumped every teacher in the school.

Rather than sinking Luka into depression, losing both of his parents in an attack by the remnants of the alien forces gave Luka an impassioned will to fight. Although small, he acts as though he can protect the weak and bring justice to all evildoers. Yet, despite these heroic tendencies, Luka has developed a strong hatred for the Wonderful 100, though they too are fighting on the side of justice.

Just one look at Luka's face exposes the deep, fresh scars on his heart. These scars led him to act recklessly during the GEATHJERK invasion, briefly putting him in serious danger; however, he was rescued by the Wonderful 100, whom he then joined in their travels.

His mother was Professor Margarita Redgrave, a scientists who worked in the CENTINELS Science Research Facilities and devoted her life to making the hyper plasma shield code-named Margarita. She is said to have been the smartest person in the history of mankind. Luka began to hate the CENTINELS, believing they took his mother from him, and eventually direct that hate toward all of humanity, allying with the GEATHJERK in a plot to sell out the planet Earth.

[Added after entering Operation 009-A]
However, due to a rescue operation by the Wonderful 100, and to Wonder-Red revealing the truth to Luka behind his mother's death, Luka repents his actions and decides to fight to save the Earth.

Description[]

Appearance[]

A young child, Luka wears baggy denim overalls, an off-white shirt, brown boots, and a striped white, blue, and orange scarf. A small camera hangs down his front by straps around his neck, and he wears an unstrapped leather aviator cap and large goggles over his unkempt and short light brown hair. Luka's eyes are blue.
Having joined the Wonderful Ones as a civilian recruit for most of the game, Luka is often seen wearing a tiny Wonder-Mask (an extra tiny one).

As a Wonderful One, Luka becomes Wonder-Goggles and dons a baggy denim blue CENTINEL-Suit, and a light blue jacket with popped collars brandishing the Wonderful Ones logo across its back. Luka's jacket is partially modified into a brown aviator jacket covering the rest of his torso. Luka's scarf is longer, his full-size Wonder-Mask obscures most of his face, and his aviator cap is now strapped into place.
Like all Wonderful Ones, when Luka activates his suit's Unlimited Form a cape is released from the back of the suit and jaw-like plates extend from his mask, covering his mouth.
When knocked out, Luka's suit vanishes and he is reduced to his aviator cap, goggles, and black briefs.

Luka's issued weapon is the Stingy Eye: a pair of futuristic laser goggles, which Luka wears in place of his civilian form's goggles. The Stingy Eye is a black, gold-trimmed pair of goggles with coiled wire antennas and a tiny Wonderful Ones logo between the lenses, capable of firing lasers from its lenses.

Personality and Traits[]

After losing both of his parents to the war against GEATHJERK, Luka developed into a defiant problem child, prone to mischief and outbursts. Luka is also fearless with seemingly no regard for his own safety, as shown by him repeatedly running off on his own to try and face the GEATHJERK by himself.

Although he initially expressed hatred towards the CENTINELS, Luka chose to ally himself with the Wonderful Ones throughout the third GEATHJERK invasion of Earth, and repeatedly sneaked into the team during missions, despite their efforts to keep him out of harm's way.
During his time with the team, Luka's potential for bravery and heroism was recognized by Wonder-Red, who requested that Luka join the Wonderful Ones officially.

After joining the team however, Luka revealed his true motives: Luka's mother, Professor Margarita, was a scientist who lost her life working for the CENTINELS. After blaming the CENTINELS for her death, Luka developed a hatred for humanity, and wanted to take his revenge on all of Earth. By using the Wonderful Ones to get close to GEATHJERK's leaders, Luka was able to offer both his allegiance and his pendant, the master control key to Earth's Super Reactors, to Gimme, and joined the invaders to wreak havoc on the planet.

Luka quickly came to regret these actions once the truth behind his mother's death was revealed to him, as in actuality Professor Margarita sacrificed her life to become Mother Platinum, the super computer operating Earth's Hyper Plasma Shield. After the destruction of both Mother Platinum and the Hyper Plasma Shield, Earth was exposed to the full might of GEATHJERK's armada, and Luka sank into despair.
However, with the support of the Wonderful Ones and his mysterious connection to Platinum Robo, Luka was encouraged to keep fighting, and joined them for real in the final battle against GEATHJERK, where his newfound heroism ultimately proved to be the key to stopping GEATHJERK once and for all.

Even once the war was over, Luka wasn't prepared to forgive himself for his actions. Promising he would find a way to make up for what he did to Earth, Luka resolved to better himself so that he could live up to his mother's dedication to the planet, reconciling with her through Platinum Robo in the process.
After joining the CENTINELS as a full-fledged Wonderful One, Luka gained a new sense of responsibility and started to focus himself towards heroism. However, as he's still a child, Luka still has a carefree and mischievous side.

Gameplay[]

Despite his impact on the story, Luka only has a minor playable role for most of the game:
Starting with Operation 003-A, Luka joins the Wonderful Ones as a temporary member as part of the story, and can be found in the Leader Select Menu in some levels. In this form Luka is a Unite Hand user, and depending on the level he can even be selected as the team leader.

Unite Goggles Icon

At the end of the game's story, Luka becomes a temporary member of the team during Operation 00A Epilogue as Wonder-Goggles. Wonder-Goggles enables the use of Unite Goggles: a Unite Morph which fires a laser beam as a long range attack.
Wonder-Goggles is one of only two Unite Goggles users in the game, the other being Wonder-Director.

Note that Wonder-Goggles is a temporary member only available during Operation 00A Epilogue. To use Wonder-Goggles (and Unite Goggles) on every level, he must be unlocked as a Secret Wonderful One.

Trivia[]

  • Luka shares the same voice actresses (Debi Derryberry and Tomomi Yamakawa) as Young Will, including using the same voice lines in combat.
  • Luka is heavily based on Luka Redgrave from the Bayonetta series, both in character and in design (particularly Luka's childhood self). Similar to The Wonderful 101's Luka, Bayonetta's Luka incorrectly believed that his father was killed at the hands of the Umbran Witch prior to the events of the first game, and sought to avenge his father until the true cause of his death was made clear.
  • Luka's middle and last name, Alan Smithee, is a pseudonym used by film directors who wish to disown a project.
    • The decision to change Luka's name to Luka Redgrave in The Wonderful One: After School Hero was likely made to avoid the negative implication associated with the name Alan Smithee, in addition to being consistent with the name of his mother, Margarita Redgrave.
    • The name Redgrave is a reference to Tony Redgrave: an alias used by Dante from the Devil May Cry Series, which was originally created by Hideki Kamiya. More specifically, the name originated from the first game's prequel novel, which Kamiya was involved with writing.
  • Luka's weapon, the Stingy Eye, may be a reference to Space Ripper Stingy Eyes, an attack used by Dio Brando and other vampires from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
  • Luka gets introduced by cutscene twice in the game: in his first appearance in Operation 000 Prologue, and again in Operation 00A Epilogue to emphasize his transformation as a character.
