Commander Laurence Nelson, otherwise known as Commander Nelson or simply Nelson, is the CENTINELS Commander in charge of The Wonderful Ones.
An experienced veteran responsible for countless victories, Commander Nelson is a trusted and respected leader with high expectations for those under his command, however, he understands the challenges the Wonderful Ones must face first-hand, as he was once a Wonderful One himself.
Commander Nelson is also the captain of the CENTINELS state-of-the-art warship, the Virgin Victory, and monitors missions from within the ship, ensuring its technology is used it fullest to support the Wonderful Ones in battle.
Commander Nelson first appears at the beginning of Operation 001-A, briefing the team on their missions at the start of every Operation and providing orders and guidance all throughout of the game.
Nelson's past self as a former Wonderful One makes a playable appearance during a flashback, and his current self is also unlockable as a Secret Character with the ability to form a unique Unite Drill.
Wonderful File[]
Commander of the CENTINELS' Blossom City field office. Skilled at ship combat, Nelson pilots the CENTINELS' state-of-the-art warship, the Virgin Victory. He is a tested general who has won countless battles with his sharp instincts and precise judgement, his ability winning him not only the utmost trust from his superiors but also the unwavering respect of those who follow him.
20 years ago, during Earth Defense War II, he fought on the front lines as a Wonderful One, leading the Earth Federation Army to victory. Through this experience he understands the harsh missions the current team must face and watches over the Wonderful 100 with a stern but kind stance.
A devoted lover of tea, the figure of Nelson with a teacup in his hand, regardless of how dire the situation may be, is a picture of reassurance and hope for the team.
[The following paragraph is added after completing Mission 002 of Operation 006-B]
Nelson feels great responsibility for failing to save Will's father during Earth Defense War II; some surmise that this may be the reason he has given Red the difficult task of leading the team on his first actual mission. Despite this fact, Nelson has supreme faith in Red's potential and the deep-seated hopes toward the success of the younger generation.

Description[]
Appearance[]
Commander Nelson is a physically fit but aging veteran, with short gray hair and a small mustache. Nelson wears a gray outfit resembling the service dress uniform of a US Navy Officer, or an airline pilot. The outfit includes black shoes, gray pleated pants with a W-shaped belt buckle, and a gray coat which notably features a silver CENTINELS logo across its back and W-shaped gold stripes on its sleeves. Nelson wears his coat open with popped collars, revealing a black shirt and red necktie underneath. Nelson's dark gray service cap bears a gold CENTINELS logo on its front and its visor is angled low, completely obscuring his upper face in darkness, although his eye color is revealed elsewhere to be gray.
As Wonder-Captain, Nelson dons a Wonder-Mask and is armed with his old weapon: the Captain Drill, a massive conical drill with a red base that fully covers his forearm.
When Wonder-Captain activates Unlimited Form, a cape is released from the back of his clothing and an old-style vertical grille extends from his mask, covering his mouth.
When unmasked, Wonder-Captain is reduced to his cap and black briefs, revealing the battle scars from his youth on his body, and interestingly, the fact that he still has spiral-shaped chest hair.
Personality and Traits[]
Commander Nelson is a highly respected members of the CENTINELS Planetary Secret Service, having earned the complete trust of superior and subordinate alike through his tactical genius and first-hand experience in battle. The respect others have toward Commander Nelson is such that even "high maintenance" members of the CENTINELS such as Wonder-Blue can be kept in-line through his wisdom alone, making him a much needed source of order that keeps the diverse and at times eccentric characters of the Wonderful Ones focused on their missions.
Although Nelson is a serious authority figure with high expectations for those under his command, he's not unsympathetic towards his men and the difficulties they face on missions, and his high expectations come from his faith in their abilities.
In particular, because of their history together, it's suggested that Nelson has a personal interest in seeing Wonder-Red succeed, which is why he chose Red to lead the Wonderful Ones.
Despite his apparently serious nature, Nelson often has a casual demeanor, and almost never shows any signs of worry. Because of this, Nelson is famous for treating himself to a cup of tea during briefings and while monitoring missions, a hobby shared by his close partner aboard the Virgin Victory, the ship's operator, Alice MacGregor.
Gameplay[]
Not counting his appearance as Wonder-Red (Emeritus), Commander Nelson is only playable once unlocked as the Secret Wonderful One, Wonder-Captain.
Wonder-Captain enables the use of Unite Drill: a close range Unite Morph similar to Unite Hand that deals damage over time by drilling into enemies. Additionally, Wonder-Captain's Unite Drill comes with a special ability: Wonder-Captain's Unite Drill is lit on fire by default, in the same way normal Unite Hands or Unite Drills are any time your Combo multiplier reaches ×2.50.
Wonder-Captain is one of only two Unite Drill users in the game, the other being his past self, Wonder-Red (Emeritus). Wonder-Captain is automatically switched to any time a Size 100 Unite Drill is drawn.

Trivia[]

- Commander Nelson's comments when pausing the game are a callback to Viewtiful Joe, which also makes fourth wall breaking comments to the player any time the game is paused. In particular, Nelson's pause quote during Operation 006 is very similar to the one from Episode 5 of Viewtiful Joe.
- Commander Nelson has a slight resemblance to Captain Blue from the Viewtiful Joe series, and fills a similar albeit minor role as the predecessor of the main protagonist in The Wonderful 101.
- Commander Nelson is the only character with an S rank ID card, making him the highest ranked member of the CENTINELS seen in the game.
