Hero Heart Fragments

Hero Heart Fragments are collectible upgrades that can be found hidden within levels in The Wonderful 101. Upon gathering 4 Hero Heart Fragments, a Hero Heart is automatically formed, permanently increasing your maximum Vitality. There's a total of 20 Hero Heart Fragments to be found in the game, and obtaining all of them is the objective of the Eat Your Heart Out! Bottle-Cap.

Hero Heart Fragment Locations

Operation 001-A

No.001

Across the broken bridge in the side area accessed by going left after Mission 013 (using the football helmet as cover from the air raid,) a Hero Heart Fragment can be found on the roof of a burning building, alongside several trapped citizens. The building is slightly taller than the height of a normal double jump, and Unite Hand must be used to shield yourself from the flames, so to reach the Hero Heart Fragment you must either use Unite Hand's Wonderful Rising Skill for a higher jump (which you are not likely to have the first time you play the level,) or carefully jump off the roof of the nearby parked car instead for the extra height.

The only one you'll have to backtrack for.

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found inside a Unite Hammer Box located in the lake to the left of the Mission 006 area.

This Supply Box doesn't appear until Unite Hammer is unlocked in 003-A

Inside the entrance to Blossom Stadium, a Hero Heart Fragment can be found devilishly hidden up in the ceiling over the stairs, where it is practically impossible to see without going out of your way to look at it. It can be reached with a simple double jump.

A Hero Heart Fragment can be seen floating high up in the air in the first area of the level, when the camera zooms out as you approach the "Munch'n Crunch Cakes" building. It can be reached in a variety of ways, but the easiest is to simply extend the Wonder-Liner directly toward the bottom of the screen while on top of the building to collect it offscreen.

Near the pool at the start of the level, there are three air vents. The middle air vent can be plugged using a Unite Ball (or Unite Spike Ball) of at least size 50, causing it to launch you into the air: doing this will allow you to reach a Hero Heart Fragment located high up in the air above the vent.

Operation 003-A

After leaving the poison gas maze, the air vent you exit out of can be plugged using a Unite Ball (or Unite Spike Ball) of at least size 50, causing it to launch you into the air: doing this will allow you to reach a Hero Heart Fragment located high up in the ceiling above the vent.

Operation 003-B

Just after entering the final shuttle after Mission 005, a Hero Heart Fragment can be found offscreen to the left, past the broken path. It can be collected by extending the Wonder-Liner toward it.

Operation 004-A

In Subscreen area at the end of the level, in the corner of the end platform near the Unite Gun Box, is a tiny wall that can be used to extend the Wonder-Liner directly upwards: doing so will form a Unite Chain that allows you to reach a hidden platform where a Hero Heart Fragment can be found.

Notice: In the Remastered Version of the game, this area of the level is subject to a glitch that makes it impossible to break objects that are on screen while the game is running at a 1920×1080 resolution or higher, potentially making it impossible to destroy the objects blocking the wall needed to form Unite Chain. To solve this issue, you can either face the camera away from the objects and use a large Unite Morph such as a Size 100 Unite Sword to destroy them while they're offscreen, or temporarily lower your game's resolution to fix the glitch with the following methods:

• In the Nintendo Switch Version you can temporarily play in handheld mode, which reduces the resolution to 1280×720 and fixes the glitch.
• In the PC Version you can temporarily lower your game's resolution to 1280×720 in the game's graphic settings to fix the glitch.
• In the PlayStation 4 Version you cannot change the game's resolution from 1920×1080, so your only option is to destroy the objects while they're off-screen.

Operation 004-B

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found on top of a pillar in the water surrounding the Mission 005 area (where you meet up with Wonder-Blue,) at the top side of the room.

Operation 005-A

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found floating in the air in the canyon separating the starting area from the main area of the outdoor jungle section of the level, located approximately halfway through the wooden cable car ride and to the upper left of it.

It can be reached in a variety of ways, but the easiest is to use a UFO left behind by the red You-Houghs that spawn nearby in order to fly over to it.

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found inside the Unite Bomb Box near the spinning drill statue and Mission 005.

Operation 005-B

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found behind a glowing rock visible on a ledge next to the aqueducts above the temple in the starting area of the level. To reach it, you must first complete Mission 001 to cool and destroy the lava geyser blocking your path through the level, after which you can climb up the aqueducts to reach it. Though the aqueducts can be scaled some difficulty while water is flowing down them, it's recommended to just go back inside the temple after Mission 001 and turn one of them to stop the flow of water.

Operation 006-A

After completing Mission 004 (the cube), go back to just before the end point of the Mission and use the Wonder-Liner to trace the shape on the path to reveal a Hero Heart Fragment.

This Wonder-Liner shape is notably generous in how it detects a valid shape, such that you can usually just circle it as if it were a Wonder-Circle to obtain its item.

Operation 006-B

At the pressure plate puzzle in the starting area of the main part of the level (after Mission 003,) move the statues onto the pressure plates to unlock a path to a small side area to the left. In this side area, use the Wonder-Liner to trace the trapezoid shape on the floor to reveal a Hero Heart Fragment.

Operation 007-A

Oh like you couldn't jump that

A Hero Heart Fragment can be found inside a Unite Hammer Box located on a platform to the bottom right of the Mission 002 platform, which can be reached by using Unite Chain to bridge the gap. However, forming a Unite Chain here requires 20 members, and under normal circumstances you'll only have 10 members in this area of the level. Additionally, using Unite chain is actually required here, as otherwise an invisible wall blocks you from falling off the main part of the level.

In order to form Unite Chain here, you'll either need to have recruited enemies during Mission 001, or you'll need to backtrack to this location after teaming up with Chewgi and the Guyzoch later in the level. Alternatively, having at least 13 Secret Wonderful Ones unlocked will let you start the level with the 20 members required.

The water geyser on the Mission 006 platform can be plugged using a Unite Ball (or Unite Spike Ball) of at least size 50, causing it to launch you into the air: doing this will allow you to reach a Hero Heart Fragment located high up in the air above the geyser.

Operation 008-A

As bad as this seems, this is only the second worst secret in the entire game

At Blossom City Elementary School (the Mission 004 area,) you can use the upper corner of the building to extend the Wonder-Liner directly upwards: doing so will form a Unite Chain that allows you to climb up to an island floating high up off screen, on which you'll find a Unite Hand Box (containing Gimme's GEATHJERK File.)

But that's not the only secret here: high up in the air directly above the box is a Hero Heart Fragment! The only way to reach it is to either use Unite Rocket while standing on top of the box, or by using Unite Gun's Wonderful Rising Skill to shoot a team member at it to collect it.

Operation 008-B

After opening the water tank located on the Mission 003 platform, the resulting water geyser can be plugged using a Unite Ball (or Unite Spike Ball) of at least size 50, causing it to launch you into the air: doing this will allow you to reach a Hero Heart Fragment located high up in the air above the geyser.

Operation 009-B

A (gigantic) Hero Heart Fragment can be found inside a (gigantic) Unite Whip Box located in the second section of the Mission 002 area. The box doesn't appear until after you progress to the next section and come back.

Operation 009-C

A freebie, to make up for that GEATHJERK File earlier.

A Hero Heart Fragment is automatically collected during the cutscene transition between the first and second phase of the battle against Jergingha. As it's automatically collected in this way, it's virtually unmissable.

• The symbol on a completed Hero Heart is the kanji "心 (kokoro)", the Japanese word for heart.
• When your Vitality Gauge is increased by a Hero Heart in the Remastered Version of the game, an onscreen message will erroneously state that it increased because you reached a certain Total Rank instead.
• Hero Heart Fragments and Hero Hearts are based on the Heart Piece and Heart Container system from The Legend of Zelda series.
  • Hero Heart Fragments are also reminiscent of the Broken Witch Heart system from the Bayonetta series.
