Cough-Foons are assault landing ships used by the GEATHJERK Federation Supreme Armada. Highly effective at transport and combat, Cough-Foons are one of GEATHJERK's most common warships.
First encountered in the Prologue, Cough-Foons are special enemies that are primarily fought during vehicle missions.
GEATHJERK File[]
A mid-size space cruiser used in planetary assaults.
Designed primarily to carry squadrons into enemy territory, it features superb offensive capabilities and significant storage capacity. Faster-than-light travel capability enables it to participate in strategic interplanetary warfare.
Cough-Foons are completely sheathed in reinforced armor strong enough to ward off anti-air missiles. Its aft section contains a cargo bay large enough to hold many air and ground weapons, letting it serve double duty as a carrier, while its bow is equipped with a powerful turbo laser cannon. When paired with its high maneuverability, the resulting combination makes the Cough-Foon stand out even among other warships.

The Cough-Foon's high reliability makes it a favorite choice to escort the Gah-Goojin, giving the ships a special kind of synergy. By unfolding a docking module in its rear, it can link up with the Gah-Goojin, forming a combination that outclasses any common warship.
By becoming the Gah-Goojin's power arm, a Cough-Foon is able to act not just as an artillery weapon but also to output a high positron repeller. This allows it unleash incredible melee offensives in the form of Hammer Knuckles, providing a big boost to Gah-Goojin's battle capabilities.
Description[]
Cough-Foons are large black space ships consisting of a spherical front (bow) section and a wedge-shaped rear (aft) section. Viewed from above, Cough-Foons have a stereotypical keyhole shape, and at the front of the spherical bow is the keyhole-shaped muzzle of a powerful laser cannon.
GEATHJERK troops are deployed via a cargo ramp on the underside of the aft section, while a set of doors at the back of the spherical aft lead directly into the Cough-Foon's command room. In the command room, Cough-Foons can be started using a hand crank located at the primary console, which activates a set of controls built into the command room floor.
Cough-Foons are capable of carrying tremendous amounts of external cargo, as seen when a Cough-Foon carrying (almost) an entire Gah-Goojin is first encountered during Operation 002-B. Cough-Foons are also designed to support Gah-Goojins in combat: on the underside of a Cough-Foon is a docking arm designed to allow the ship to combine with a Gah-Goojin in place of an arm as a form of field repair. When combined, the Cough-Foon can be used as both a ranged and melee weapon by the Gah-Goojin.
In this combined state, the Cough-Foon may shed its armor coating to unveil a series of supermagnetic spikes underneath. However, as this desperation move was promptly countered by the Wonderful Ones in its only appearance, its full attack potential remains unseen.
Gameplay[]
While seen frequently throughout the game, Cough-Foons are rarely actually fought during normal gameplay sections. In the few rare instances where a Cough-Foon is fought directly, they're typically dispatched either through a QTE or by using Unite Sword to reflect its laser beams back into it, instantly destroying it.
The only exception to this is during Mission 003 of Operation 002-A, where you must battle a Cough-Foon while riding atop a maglev car. While the Cough-Foon's Unite Sword weakness still applies in this battle, it's also vulnerable to ranged attacks like Unite Gun.
On the other hand, Cough-Foons are the most common enemies fought during the game's many vehicle missions, appearing in large numbers in almost every one. Some vehicle missions even involve controlling a Cough-Foon itself. Cough-Foons fought during vehicle missions generally have little health and attack using combinations of energy shots, torpedoes and laser beams. When Unite Sword is not available to reflect their lasers, their attacks must instead be maneuvered around until they can be safely destroyed, or avoided altogether.

Trivia[]
- The name and keyhole motifs of Cough-Foons are both derived from 古墳 (kofun), a type of burial mound constructed during the Kofun period of Japan, many of which have a distinctive keyhole shape when viewed from above. Kofun with this keyhole shape are referred to as 前方後円墳 (Zenpokoenfun)[1]
