The Body Type of your team members is a minor game mechanic in The Wonderful 101. While at first the body types of Wonderful Ones and other playable characters might only seem like a cosmetic difference, they do actually have an effect on gameplay: body types determine how quickly the team leader can run while carrying their Unite Morph or an Enemy Weapon.

Body Type Overview

In total there are 7 body types: Normal, Buff, Female, Fat, Lanky, Child, and Baby.
The Child and Baby body types are identical in terms of gameplay, so for all purposes Baby characters can just be grouped together with Child characters.
Depending on the team leader's body type and the actual weapon in question, when carrying a Unite Morph or Enemy Weapon they'll run at one of four carrying speeds: slow, average, average-fast, or fast.

Team leaders with a slow carry speed weapon run very slowly, to the point that it could be considered a serious handicap.
Team leaders with an average carry speed weapon run slightly slower than normal movement (i.e. not carrying anything). Most default team leaders have at least an average carrying speed for their Unite Morph.
Team leaders with a fast carry speed weapon run at the same speed as normal movement, meaning they're almost completely unaffected by carrying the weapon.

Exclusive to Lanky characters is the average-fast carry speed, which as the name suggests is somewhere in between the average and fast carry speed.

Note that only speeds while running on the ground are affected by body types: the mid-air jumping speed is the same for all body types, and about as quick as the average carrying speed. This means that jumping can help you get around more quickly using a team leader with a slow carry speed weapon, whereas jumping will actually be slower with a fast carry speed weapon.
Also note the size of a Unite Morph has no bearing on its carry speed: A minimal Size 10 Unite Morph and a maximum Size 200 Unite are carried at the same speeds.

Additionally, during Operation 009-B and 009-C's giant robot sequences, the body type of each character is determined by their weapon: each character has a normal body type, with the exception of hammer and naginata users which are both all buff, and claw users and bowgun users which are both all female. What this means is that any character used during these sequences will always have an average carry speed, with the exception of Unite Hammer and Unify Naginata users, whom retain their fast carry speed.

Strategy

While you might think it's a good idea to set every Unite Morph to a Wonderful One with a fast carry speed for that weapon, it's generally not worth going out of your way to do so. There are two reasons for this:
First, the users of each Unite Morph are reset back to their defaults frequently over the course of the game, meaning you'll have to set them again often.
Second, if the set user for a Unite Morph is unavailable, you'll switch to a random team member when changing weapons. This random team member could have a slow carry speed, making it practically impossible to avoid playing as a slow team leader.

If you still want to manually set fast Wonderful Ones to each Unite Morph, then set Unite Hand, Sword, and Bomb to a Buff user, and Unite Gun to a Lanky user: This achieves the fastest speed possible for every Unite Morph.
However, it's still important to know how to compensate for slow carry speeds:

• Jumping as a character with a slow carry speed is faster than staying on the ground.
• For most Unite Morphs, you can propel yourself forward using the Wonderful Stinger Skill to help you get around more quickly once the skill has been unlocked.
• For Enemy Weapons, Unite Ball lets you easily transport them long distances faster than any body type can run carrying it

When it comes to Enemy Weapons, Lanky characters have the distinction of being the only body type capable of carrying Hoedown/Raydown/Gehdown Cannons at an average speed, rather than a slow speed like all other body types. Given the usefulness of these weapons, this is a useful combination to remember.
Assuming all Unite Morph users are at their defaults, a good trick to remember when using these weapons is to switch to Unite Claw, as Wonder-White is the only main character with a Lanky body type.

Trivia

• The 7 different Body Types are never actually named in the game, thus the Wiki uses unofficial names for them, which were selected to be distinct and easy to understand.
  • The Female body type is actually a bit inaccurate, as there are also female Wonderful Ones with a Child or Lanky body type. However, all Wonderful Ones with the Female body type are female, obviously.
  • There's also a minor discrepancy in the case of the Child body type, as the perhaps child-sized but very-much-not-a-child Professor Shirogane happens to fall under this body type.
• Not counting Prince Vorkken's ability to use any Unite Morph when played using The Prince Vorkken DLC, the Normal body type has the most Unite Morphs available at 9, as there's a Normal user for every Unite Morph except for Unite Hammer, Unite Bowgun, and Unify Naginata.
  • Meanwhile, there are two ways to look at which body type has access to the fewest Unite Morphs. The Lanky body type only has access to 3: Unite Sword, Unite Gun, and Unite Claw. However, if you count the practically identical Baby and Child body types separately, then Baby has the fewest Unite Morphs available at only 1: Unite Bomb.
• In total, there are 38 Normal Wonderful Ones, 12 Buff Wonderful Ones, 28 Female Wonderful Ones, 10 Fat Wonderful Ones, 15 Lanky Wonderful Ones, 10 Child Wonderful Ones, and 2 Baby Wonderful Ones.
• Unite Sword and Unite Hand are tied for the most variety in users at 5 body types each. There's a Unite Hand user of every body type except Lanky and Baby, and there's a Unite Sword user of every body type except Fat and Baby.
• Not counting Secret Unite Morphs or Prince Vorkken, Unite Hammer and Unite Whip have the least variety in users at only 2 body types: Buff and Fat for the former, and Normal and Female for the latter.
• Not counting Prince Vorkken, Unite Goggles is the only Secret Unite Morph with users of more than one body type.
• Unite Bomb is the only Unite Morph whose default users, both Wonder-Black and Wonder-Gramps, have a slow carry speed for it.
